Total War Rome II - Wrath of Sparta DLC: An Epic Experience in the Hellenic World

Wrath of Sparta represents an epic expansion for Total War: ROME II, focusing exclusively on the Hellenic world and immersing players in the turbulent events of the Peloponnesian War. Set in 432 BC, this DLC brings players to the heart of one of the most iconic wars in ancient history.

The Historical Context: Greece in 432 BC

The Greek city-states are in turmoil. Athens, a prosperous member of the Delian League, is at odds with Sparta, Corinth, and the Boeotian League. Alliances are fragile, and each state has its own interests, making the future of Greece extremely uncertain. Meanwhile, the Persian Empire watches from afar, ready to take advantage of the political chaos.

Main Features of Wrath of Sparta

New Campaign Map Wrath of Sparta introduces the oldest campaign map ever created for a Total War™ game, faithfully representing the Greek world of 423 BC with 22 provinces and 78 regions. The map includes the Greek mainland and the Ionian coast islands, along with 12 new Wonders like the ruins of Troy, the Temple of Zeus, and the Royal Tombs of Macedonia. Each turn represents a month, making the campaign more intense and detailed.

Four Playable Factions The playable factions in Wrath of Sparta are Athens, Corinth, Sparta, and Boeotia. Each faction has unique characteristics, exclusive units, and specific challenges. Famous generals and statesmen like Lysander of Sparta and Socrates of Athens appear, offering unprecedented historical immersion. Sparta, with its superior land military, and Athens, with advanced naval technology, offer distinct gameplay styles.

Panhellenic Games and Festivals The Olympic, Pythian, Isthmian, and Nemean games are represented in the game. During these events, players can make strategic choices like supporting an athlete or sending delegates, with positive or negative consequences. Greek religious festivals, with their bonuses, add an extra layer of realism.

New Technology Trees Wrath of Sparta introduces new technology trees reflecting the military, naval, and civil developments of the era. Six branches of the technology tree allow players to advance in various fields, including philosophy, aesthetics, and mathematics.

Hellenic Tribalism The Hellenic factions in Wrath of Sparta do not suffer public disorder due to the presence of other Greek tribes, but face diplomatic penalties with non-Greek factions. The term "culture" is replaced by "tribalism," better reflecting the social structure of the time.

The Persian Threat The Persian Empire, located to the east of the map, does not directly interfere in Greek affairs. However, if a Greek faction gains excessive power, the Persians will intervene militarily to restore balance.

New Military and Naval Units The four playable factions have new units representing the military technologies of the era. Hoplites play a central role, with support units offering great tactical variety. Greek naval resources include variants of the diere and trireme, with emphasis on ramming and boarding actions. Transport ships are more realistic, acting as cargo rather than warships, eliminating unfair advantages.

Among the over 50 new units, we find legendary troops like the Immortal Lancers, Spartan Hoplites, and Sciritae, adding depth and realism to the game.
