Buy The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu Steam Altergift GLOBAL for PC and face a cooperative action horror experience inspired by the Lovecraftian universe. Explore a hostile jungle, recover forbidden treasures and cooperate with up to three other players while illusions and madness destroy every certainty.
An expedition toward riches no one should ever find
The adventure follows a group of explorers searching for The Mound, a legendary place hidden within an apparently impenetrable jungle. According to the stories, the region contains extraordinary riches, ancient secrets and traces left behind by missing expeditions. Reaching it, however, means entering a territory dominated by incomprehensible creatures and phenomena capable of altering reality.
The Tempestad galleon serves as the team’s operational base. Before every expedition, the participants receive a contract, select weapons and tools and decide how to distribute the available resources. After reaching the coast, the group must explore, collect valuable objects and return alive before conditions become impossible to manage.
Expeditions may require the recovery of riches, documents, missing people or information needed to locate new areas. Moving deeper into the jungle increases the potential value of the loot but also exposes the team to greater dangers.
Every mission becomes a balance between ambition and survival. Returning early guarantees a limited reward, while continuing to explore can transform a profitable expedition into a desperate escape.
Madness turns your companions into potential enemies
The sanity system is one of the central elements of the experience. The jungle does not simply conceal creatures and traps but gradually changes the perception of the characters. Sounds, images and threats may appear real to only one participant, making it difficult to understand what is actually happening.
An explorer may see a monster in place of a companion, hear calls for help that do not exist or notice movements invisible to the other players. Reacting impulsively to these visions can waste ammunition, separate the team or cause attacks against innocent targets.
Communication therefore becomes essential but not always reliable. Describing what appears on the screen can help the others assess the danger, although nobody can be completely certain that the information received is correct.
The longer the group remains in the jungle, the greater the risk of losing clarity. The team must monitor its condition, avoid isolation and decide when to end the exploration.
Fear does not come only from the presence of monsters but also from constant uncertainty. Even a trusted ally may suddenly appear as a hostile creature, turning trust into a resource as fragile as ammunition.
Online cooperation for up to four players
Online cooperative mode allows up to four explorers to participate in the same expedition. Each member can carry different weapons, tools, medical supplies and resources, making it important to organise the group before leaving the galleon.
A balanced team can assign specific roles. Some participants may focus on defence, while others search for treasure, carry materials or monitor the route to the extraction point. Correct equipment distribution reduces the risk of leaving a companion without useful tools during an encounter.
Staying together provides greater protection but slows exploration. Separating allows the team to cover more ground and locate objectives quickly, although it increases the risk of facing creatures, illusions or unexplained phenomena alone.
Spatial voice communication links each voice to the position of the character. Moving too far away makes companions difficult to hear and can create moments of genuine isolation. When madness begins to affect perception, even a simple call may become suspicious.
The game can also be played in single-player mode. Cooperation remains the heart of the experience, as conflicting perceptions and the loss of trust become especially unpredictable when real people are involved.
The galleon is the border between safety and nightmare
Between missions, the explorers return to the Tempestad. The ship functions as an operational base, preparation area and location where recovered loot can be transformed into new opportunities.
Before departure, players can review the contract, select equipment and assess the objectives. Available resources must be distributed carefully because a team without ranged weapons, healing items or suitable tools may encounter serious problems within the first few minutes.
Treasures and materials brought back from the jungle can be used to obtain new equipment and prepare for more demanding expeditions. Meat recovered during exploration may also be processed through the ship’s stations to create resources and upgrades.
The galleon represents a relatively safe place where the group can plan without the pressure of madness. On land, every decision must be made quickly and may have permanent consequences for the outcome of the mission.
Knowing when to return is essential. An injured, disoriented team with almost no ammunition may lose everything while attempting to recover one final treasure. The ability to abandon a potential reward is often as important as combat skill.
Abandoned forts open the route to The Mound
The jungle contains hidden paths, ruins, fortifications and increasingly hostile areas. Some abandoned forts preserve logbooks and documents belonging to previous expeditions. These materials may reveal information about the region and indicate new routes.
Recovering important intelligence allows selected fortifications to be used as advanced starting points. Future missions can therefore begin closer to the deeper areas, avoiding the need to repeat the entire journey from the coast.
Reaching and unlocking an outpost involves significant risks. Forts may be occupied by creatures, surrounded by fog or located in regions where mental distortions become more frequent.
Exploration rewards the ability to recognise paths, landmarks and possible escape routes. Returning to a familiar area does not guarantee safety because the jungle can alter encounters and perceptions.
Every unlocked location represents another step toward the final objective. Beginning an expedition deeper inside the jungle allows access to better treasures but immediately places the team in areas where enemies and supernatural phenomena are more dangerous.
Historical weapons against impossible creatures
Explorers can use knives, swords, muskets and other tools appropriate to the historical setting. Every weapon has advantages and limitations that must be considered before beginning an expedition.
Muskets allow players to attack from a distance but require preparation time and use limited ammunition. Missing a shot can leave a character vulnerable, especially when a creature approaches quickly.
Melee weapons do not consume bullets but require close-range combat. This option becomes particularly dangerous when it is impossible to determine whether the observed target is real or generated by madness.
The team must decide when to fight, when to hide and when to change route. Eliminating every creature can consume too many resources, while avoiding combat preserves ammunition for later areas.
Equipment distribution is also important. Giving all the best weapons to one player may seem effective but becomes dangerous if that participant is isolated, injured or affected by a hallucination.
Combat rewards caution, coordination and resource management instead of turning every expedition into a simple sequence of shootouts.
The living jungle hides monsters and deception
The forest is inhabited by creatures inspired by cosmic horror, capable of appearing suddenly and changing the behaviour of the team. Some enemies attack directly, while others confuse the senses and make it difficult to distinguish a real threat from a vision.
Fog reduces visibility and conceals paths, movement and possible ambushes. A distant sound may indicate a monster, a companion or something that exists only inside the character’s mind.
Combat is not always the best solution. Avoiding a creature preserves health and ammunition but may force the team to follow a longer or less familiar route.
Moving without checking corners and escape routes can transform a manageable encounter into a disaster. Separating without a plan also increases the risk of a player becoming surrounded or completely losing contact with the group.
Threats become more intense as the team approaches its destination. The jungle appears to react to the presence of the explorers, changing the environment and exploiting their fears. Unreal Engine 5 supports a visual direction built around fog, humidity and distortions of reality.
Risk and reward make every expedition different
Every mission requires the correct balance between greed and survival. The most valuable riches are found in dangerous areas, but reaching them consumes time, health, ammunition and sanity.
The team may return early with limited loot or continue exploring in the hope of obtaining a greater reward. An overly cautious approach slows progression, while taking excessive risks may result in the loss of the entire expedition.
Contracts, equipment, routes and participant behaviour make every session different. Even a previously visited area can generate new situations because of illusions and the decisions made by the group.
