Buy The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu Steam Key ROW for PC and lead an expedition into the jungle in search of forbidden riches. Team up with up to three companions, protect your sanity, recover the loot and return alive to the ship before the illusions destroy the group.

A 16th-century expedition into the unknown

The story follows a group of 16th-century explorers willing to risk everything to reach a remote territory that appears to be rich in treasure. The mission sets out from the Tempestad, an old galleon that serves as a refuge, storehouse and operational base before each foray into the jungle.

The initial objective is to recover precious artefacts and bring them back to the ship. However, the territory harbours a supernatural force capable of altering the environment, confusing the senses and pitting the team members against one another. Rain, fog and noises emanating from the vegetation turn every path into a potential trap.

The mysterious Tumulus lies at the heart of the legends surrounding the island. Approaching its location means facing increasingly dangerous creatures, discovering the remains of vanished expeditions and gathering clues about the origin of the curse.

The narrative is pieced together through diaries, documents and environmental details. The information uncovered helps to understand the fate of previous explorers, but does not completely dispel the doubt as to what is real and what is a product of madness.

Explore alone or with a team of four players

The adventure can be played in single-player mode or in online co-op with up to four players. Before setting off, each explorer chooses the weapons, torches and tools to take into the jungle, contributing to the group’s overall preparation.

Working together allows responsibilities and resources to be shared. One player can light the way, another can check the vegetation, whilst the others prepare weapons or carry the loot. Staying close together increases safety, but limits the speed at which different areas can be explored.

Spreading out allows players to cover a wider area, but exposes each player to the risk of facing a creature without support. The jungle can also alter the appearance of allies, making it difficult to recognise who is actually in front of one’s character.

Communication therefore becomes part of the strategy. Comparing what each member sees helps to identify illusions, avoid accidental attacks and decide when to leave an area.

Even when travelling alone, it is essential to plan every expedition carefully. Unable to rely on a division of labour, the lone explorer must balance weapons, lighting, carrying capacity and tools useful for extraction.

Sanity affects what you see and hear

Madness is one of the core mechanics of the experience. Spending a long time in the jungle, getting close to creatures and witnessing inexplicable phenomena can gradually distort your character’s perception.

A companion might suddenly appear as a monster. A treasure might turn out to be a trap, whilst a figure glimpsed amongst the trees could be a real creature or simply a hallucination. These distortions are not necessarily the same for all players, making every account potentially unreliable.

Reacting impulsively can have serious consequences. Firing at an apparition risks wasting precious ammunition or wounding an ally, whilst ignoring a genuine presence may allow the enemy to close in.

Fog, rain and changes in light intensify the sense of disorientation. Even a route you have already travelled may seem different when your sanity is low and sounds begin to come from unpredictable directions.

To survive, you must maintain control, communicate with your group and verify information before acting. The threat comes not only from the creatures, but from your growing inability to trust your own senses.

Fight with muskets, blades and 16th-century weapons

The explorers use equipment inspired by the 16th century. Fuse-lit muskets, flintlock weapons, knives and other tools offer considerable firepower, but require much longer preparation and reloading times than modern weapons.

Every shot must be carefully considered. Firing too soon can leave your character vulnerable, whilst waiting too long allows creatures to close the distance. Melee weapons are a useful alternative when ammunition is limited, but they force you to engage the enemy at close quarters.

In co-op mode, it’s best to coordinate your fire, ensuring that not all team members reload at the same time. One player can keep the target under control whilst a teammate prepares their next shot or seeks a safer position.

Vegetation often restricts visibility and allows enemies to approach undetected. Some creatures react to noise, whilst others may suddenly emerge from the ground or the trees.

Fighting isn’t always necessary. Avoiding a threat allows you to conserve resources and reduces the risk of attracting further enemies. The ability to recognise when to flee is just as important as accuracy with weapons.

Recover treasures and complete the extraction

The game cycle combines preparation, exploration, loot collection and return to the Tempestad. Before setting off, you must choose what to take, taking into account the available space and the expedition’s objectives.

In the jungle, you can find treasures, materials, supplies and clues linked to previous missions. Every item you carry takes up space and may force you to leave behind useful tools or less valuable rewards.

Loot is only retained once you have successfully returned to the ship. Dying or failing the extraction may result in the loss of recovered resources, rendering part of the work carried out during the mission pointless.

Some tools help locate hidden objects, but the noise they make may attract nearby creatures. The team must therefore decide whether the potential reward justifies the risk.

Continuing to explore increases the chances of finding better treasures, but exposes the team to greater loss of sanity and ammunition consumption. Withdrawing too soon limits your gains, whilst waiting too long may jeopardise the entire expedition.

Prepare each mission from the ship Tempestad

The Tempestad is not merely the starting point for expeditions. The galleon serves as an explorable base, a preparation area and a place where recovered resources are managed.

Before each departure, you can check your equipment, choose your tools and coordinate with the other members of the group. The composition of the cargo must take into account the type of mission, the distance to be travelled and the possibility of encountering particularly formidable enemies.

Carrying too many weapons reduces the space available for loot. Relying solely on exploration tools, on the other hand, makes it harder to survive a sudden encounter. Every choice directly influences what the group will be able to do in the jungle.

The resources obtained during missions help to improve preparations for subsequent expeditions. More effective equipment and a greater knowledge of the terrain allow you to reach more remote areas, but they do not eliminate the risk posed by illusions.

Between missions, you can analyse the clues gathered and plan a new route. Progress therefore rewards both combat skill and the ability to organise each raid effectively.

A living, unpredictable jungle

The environment is designed to convey a constant sense of vulnerability. Dense vegetation, rocks, mud and trees restrict visibility, whilst weather conditions can change as you explore.

Rain reduces your ability to hear what is happening nearby. Fog hides paths and creatures, whilst changes in light rapidly alter the appearance of different areas.

The terrain may seem familiar during one expedition and completely different on the next. The madness system alters your perception and prevents you from relying entirely on your memory.

Creatures include corrupted humanoids, insects, plant-bound beings and supernatural apparitions. Some attack directly, whilst others increase the confusion or force the party to change course.

The sound design uses distant noises, snapping branches, cries and ambient sounds to signal potential dangers. However, not every sound corresponds to a real threat, and fear can lead players to misinterpret what they hear.

Cosmic horror inspired by the atmosphere of H. P. Lovecraft

The experience draws on the themes of cosmic horror associated with the stories of H. P. Lovecraft. The danger is not only posed by visible monsters, but by the existence of forces too ancient and incomprehensible to be confronted directly.

The team enters a territory where the normal rules of reality seem to lose their meaning. Objects, companions and paths may change appearance, whilst the jungle manipulates perception to breed paranoia.

The historical setting contributes to the explorers’ vulnerability. Slow weapons, basic tools and limited knowledge prevent them from confronting the supernatural with advanced technology.

The tension arises from the conflict between greed and survival. Every treasure encourages the group to press on, but every minute spent away from the ship increases the risk of never making it back.

The narrative avoids explaining every phenomenon straight away. Diaries, ruins and the remains of previous expeditions offer partial interpretations, leaving it up to the player to piece the events together and understand the role of the Mound.
