A sixteenth-century expedition searching for forbidden riches

The story follows a group of sixteenth-century explorers travelling towards an unknown region surrounded by legends of lost treasures and ancient civilisations. Their initial objective appears simple: reach the island, enter the jungle and return to the ship with enough valuables to finance another expedition. However, the territory hides something far older and more dangerous.

The Tempestad serves as the group’s base of operations. This weathered ship provides a refuge between missions, allowing players to prepare equipment, select weapons, organise the team and invest the resources recovered from previous expeditions. Every departure involves a new risk because the paths through the jungle change and the available information is never completely reliable.

The explorers are searching for the mysterious Mound, but the landscape appears to react to their presence. Fog, rain and supernatural phenomena distort perception, while apparently safe trails may lead towards traps or corrupted creatures. Even familiar objects can change shape as sanity begins to decline.

The story develops through journals, clues and discoveries made during expeditions. Reconstructing the fate of previous teams gradually reveals the origin of the curse without completely removing the uncertainty surrounding what truly happened.

Cooperative expeditions for up to four players

The experience can be played alone or in online cooperative mode with up to four explorers. Every participant contributes by selecting weapons, tools and useful supplies, while the group must decide which areas to investigate and when to return to the ship.

Cooperation is important during both exploration and combat. One player can illuminate the path with an oil lamp while the others monitor the vegetation or prepare their weapons. Dividing resources makes it possible to carry more equipment, but separating increases the risk of being isolated by a creature or illusion.

Communication becomes more difficult when the jungle starts altering reality. An ally may appear as a monster, a voice may come from the wrong direction and an apparently safe signal may lure the group into danger. Trust between team members is therefore as important as accuracy during combat.

Every expedition provides enough time for tactical preparation without becoming an endless mission. The group must collect what it can, evaluate the value of the loot and choose the correct moment to retreat.

Continuing the exploration may provide greater rewards, but it also exposes the team to more enemies, limited resources and a growing loss of sanity. Returning to the ship alive is always more important than recovering one final treasure.

Sanity turns allies and treasures into threats

The explorers’ minds are one of the main battlefields. Time spent in the jungle, proximity to creatures and exposure to supernatural events progressively reduce their ability to distinguish reality from illusion.

A companion may suddenly appear deformed or take the shape of a hostile creature. A treasure may seem genuine before revealing itself as a trap, while distant shapes between the trees could be harmless shadows or enemies preparing to attack.

These distortions are not merely visual effects. Reacting impulsively may injure allies, waste ammunition or separate the team. Survival requires communication, comparison between what each player sees and a cautious response whenever information does not match.

The system makes even familiar routes unpredictable. Fog, rain, changing light and sounds from unclear directions can alter the atmosphere of the jungle. The tension comes from never knowing whether a detail is real or produced by fear.

Maintaining sanity helps players interpret dangers more accurately, but it never completely removes the influence of the Mound. Equipment, cooperation and the ability to retreat at the correct moment are essential for preventing madness from compromising the entire expedition.

Slow combat with historical weapons and limited resources

The explorers use weapons inspired by the sixteenth century, with longer reload times than modern firearms. Matchlock muskets, flintlock weapons, blades and improvised tools require preparation and careful timing before every encounter.

Firing without considering the distance can leave the character vulnerable during the reload animation. Melee weapons provide an alternative when ammunition is limited, but they force players to approach creatures capable of dealing serious damage.

The group must coordinate its shots to avoid having every member reload at the same time. One explorer can keep an enemy at a distance while another prepares the next attack. Positioning is also important because vegetation, rocks and uneven ground can restrict visibility.

Enemies include corrupted humanoids, giant insects, apparitions and creatures connected to the jungle. Some respond to noise, while others emerge from the vegetation when the group moves too close.

Combat is not always the best solution. Every bullet used may be unavailable during a more dangerous situation, while a noisy encounter can attract additional threats. Avoiding an enemy, using another route or abandoning an area may be more valuable than winning a costly fight.

Recover treasures and return them to the Tempestad

The gameplay loop revolves around preparation, exploration and returning to the ship. Before departure, players must choose equipment suited to the objective while considering available space and the risks of the expedition. Inside the jungle, the group searches for treasures, materials, food and clues connected to previous missions.

Loot only retains its value when it is safely extracted. Dying or failing to return may result in the loss of important items and part of the progress made during the expedition. This structure creates a constant decision between continuing the search and protecting what has already been collected.

Some treasures can be located through signals and tools that may attract nearby creatures. The group must decide whether the potential reward justifies the noise and exposure.

The Tempestad allows players to organise supplies, prepare new tools and use recovered resources. The ship is not simply a menu, but an explorable environment used for equipment management, cooking and planning.

Progression makes later expeditions more manageable without removing the danger. Better knowledge of the jungle and improved tools help the team reach advanced locations, but illusions and environmental conditions continue to make every journey unpredictable.

Success depends on recognising when greed has become more powerful than caution.

Deluxe Edition with an exclusive mission, characters and bonus content

The Deluxe Edition expands the base game with an exclusive mission, additional characters, alternative equipment appearances and the original soundtrack. It is designed for players who want the complete experience and additional customisation options.

The Deluxe Edition includes:

  • Complete base game
  • Temple of Yig exclusive mission
  • Characters and Items Pack
  • Two exclusive playable characters
  • Exclusive knife appearance
  • Exclusive oil lamp appearance
  • Exclusive matchlock musket appearance
  • Exclusive flintlock musket appearance
  • Original digital soundtrack

Temple of Yig introduces a dedicated contract set in a specific area of the cursed jungle. The mission provides a new objective and expands the mysteries explored during normal expeditions.

The two additional characters offer more visual variety when forming the team. The exclusive equipment appearances change the look of commonly used tools and weapons without necessarily altering combat balance.

The soundtrack may be managed as separate digital content from the main game. The combination of an additional mission, characters and cosmetic items makes this edition suitable for players who want access to the main bonus content available at launch.

A Lovecraftian nightmare created with Unreal Engine 5

The art direction creates a humid, dense jungle that appears almost alive. Trees, rocks, mud and vegetation restrict visibility, while fog changes the perception of distance. Even before enemies appear, the environment communicates the feeling of entering hostile territory.

Unreal Engine 5 is used to represent complex foliage, wet surfaces and changing atmospheric conditions. Light can take on unnatural colours, while rain and mist reduce the ability to identify creatures hiding nearby.

Enemy design combines corrupted human bodies, insects, plant-like beings and apparitions that are difficult to interpret. Some presences appear only briefly, leaving players unsure about what they actually witnessed.

Audio supports the tension through distant cries, breaking branches, rainfall and noises coming from the vegetation. In cooperative mode, the voices of other players become part of the soundscape and may provide guidance or create additional confusion.

The atmosphere draws inspiration from the cosmic horror associated with H. P. Lovecraft without relying only on gigantic monsters. The real danger comes from losing trust in your own senses and being unable to fully understand what controls the jungle.
