SOMA is a deep and reflective experience that challenges players to confront fundamental questions about human existence. If you enjoy thought-provoking stories and psychological horror, SOMA is a must-play title that will leave you pondering long after the game ends.

SOMA: An Unsettling Journey into the Depths of the Ocean

In the realm of psychological horror video games, few titles match the oppressive atmosphere and engaging narrative of SOMA. Developed by Frictional Games, known for their work on Amnesia: The Dark Descent, SOMA is distinguished by its deep exploration of themes such as identity, consciousness, and the meaning of humanity. Set in a dystopian future, the game takes players into the ocean depths, in a world devastated by a comet impact. This article offers a detailed overview of SOMA's plot, gameplay modes, and unique experiences.

The Accident and the Awakening

In 2015, Simon Jarrett suffers a severe car accident that causes significant brain damage and cranial hemorrhages. Seeking a solution, Simon accepts the offer from David Munshi, a graduate student proposing an experimental brain scan. However, at the end of the scan, Simon inexplicably finds himself in 2104, in the dilapidated underwater research center Pathos-II. Originally intended for launching satellites and probes into space without costly rockets, Pathos-II is now a place of desolation and mystery.

The First Contact

While exploring the Upsilon site, Simon makes radio contact with Catherine Chun, one of the few surviving employees. Catherine reveals that a year earlier, a comet struck the Earth, causing a mass extinction that rendered the surface uninhabitable. While many Pathos-II employees perished due to isolation, machines and robots began developing human-like faculties.

Shocking Discoveries

Upon reaching Catherine at the Lambda site, Simon discovers that the Catherine he is talking to is actually a digital consciousness. In another twist, Simon learns that his own consciousness is the result of the 2015 brain scan, loaded into the modified body of another Pathos-II employee. This macabre experiment was orchestrated by the artificial intelligence WAU, which has taken control of the center and turned the surviving humans into bio-mechanical monsters in an attempt to preserve humanity.

The ARK Mission

The only hope of preserving human history lies in ARK, a computer that simulates a world containing scans of all Pathos-II personnel. Although complete, ARK was never launched into space, and this mission is entrusted to Simon.

Journey into the Deep

To retrieve ARK, Simon must reach the Tau site in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean. After several failed attempts and constructing a new body at Omicron, Simon descends into the Abyss. Here, he encounters the voice of the late artificial intelligence expert Johan Ross, who urges Simon to destroy WAU. After retrieving ARK and overcoming numerous obstacles, Simon manages to launch it into space from the Phi site.

The Final Confrontation

Despite the successful launch, Simon and Catherine remain on Earth. Catherine explains that only their digital copies are on ARK, leading Simon to an existential crisis. After a heated argument, the power goes out, leaving Simon alone, in the dark, at the ocean's depths.

The Epilogue

After the credits, the game offers a vision of Simon and Catherine within ARK, in an idyllic landscape, unaware of their original selves' fate. ARK, now drifting in space, is the last bastion of human civilization.

Exploration and Puzzle Solving

SOMA is a first-person game that emphasizes exploration and puzzle-solving, without a direct combat system. Players must navigate hostile environments, avoiding enemies and gathering clues in the form of notes, voice recordings, and memories.

Game Modes

A new feature in SOMA, compared to previous Frictional Games titles, is the introduction of the Safe Mode. In this mode, enemies can attack but not kill the player, allowing for a more relaxed and narrative-focused exploration.

Psychological Horror Elements

The game is rich in psychological horror elements, with a plot that explores themes such as identity and consciousness. The isolated and oppressive underwater structure of Pathos-II contributes to a constant atmosphere of tension.
