The Shadow Under the Cowl introduces the mysterious Horatio

Developed and published by Crytek, The Shadow Under the Cowl was released on January 18, 2024 as additional content for Hunt: Showdown 1896.

The DLC revolves around The Cowl, a Hunter once known as Horatio. From childhood, he developed a particular obsession with insects, observing how colonies and swarms followed hierarchies, signals, and collective instincts.

His view of the world became increasingly extreme, especially during his time at a military academy. His rejection of order and hierarchy eventually led to his dishonorable discharge.

Left without any real sense of belonging, Horatio turned his ability to identify weaknesses and create chaos into a profession, eventually making his way to the bayou.

The Cowl and the encounter with the Assassin

Horatio’s final transformation takes place during his first Hunt.

In the bayou, he encounters the Assassin, one of the terrifying creatures created by the Corruption. The confrontation ends almost immediately: the monster tears open his chest and leaves him apparently dead.

As he lies wounded and surrounded by insects, Horatio observes the swarm’s behavior and reaches a new conclusion. These creatures do not appear to need a single leader: they are united by a common instinct pushing them toward the same goal.

From this experience, The Cowl is born.

The new Hunter does not simply want to survive the Corruption, but to rise through it and become an even purer instrument of its power.

Rib Burster for Springfield M1892 Krag Bayonet

Rib Burster is the included variant for the Springfield M1892 Krag Bayonet.

The weapon is directly connected to the character’s military past. Horatio received this rifle during his service and continued to keep it even after his dishonorable discharge.

The Krag Bayonet combines ranged capability with the option to use the bayonet in close combat, making it particularly fitting for a Hunter whose identity is based on precision and sudden violence.

Rib Burster changes the appearance of the equipment without creating a separate weapon category or introducing exclusive stat advantages over the base model.

Eye Taker for Hunting Bow

Eye Taker is the cosmetic content dedicated to the Hunting Bow.

The bow represents a quieter approach compared with traditional firearms and fits perfectly with The Cowl’s stealthy and unsettling identity.

The DLC’s narrative description highlights the almost imperceptible sound of the string before the arrow reaches its victim.

Throwing Knives allow you to handle certain situations with greater discretion than a firearm.

Like the other items in the pack, Swarm Cutter is thematically linked to the Hunter’s story and does not represent a new equipment category.
