A Cinematic FPS Born from the Popular Half-Life: Alyx Mods
Gunman Contracts - Stand Alone was created by solo developer ANB_Seth, the author of the Gunman Contracts - Chapter 1 & Chapter 2 mods for Half-Life: Alyx.
This version is not simply an adaptation of those mods. The project was developed from the ground up as a standalone single-player experience for both VR and traditional monitors.
The protagonist is the Gunman, a professional operative feared throughout the criminal underworld and working for an organization that intervenes where the law cannot reach.
The experience focuses on fast gunfights, close-range combat, precision, and action-movie atmosphere, with environments designed to make every contract feel intense and highly cinematic.
Hunt the Collectors Across Three Story Contracts
The campaign available in the current Early Access version puts the Gunman on the trail of the Collectors, a criminal organization responsible for kidnappings and murders for reasons that remain unclear.
The three initial story contracts are connected and take place across different locations.
The adventure begins at an old hideout outside the city, continues through a harbor district controlled by a criminal syndicate, and eventually reaches a mafia-run restaurant hiding something much darker beneath it.
The story is designed to expand progressively through additional contracts. The developer plans at least three more major missions on the road to version 1.0, although future content may change during Early Access.
The Hive: Prepare Your Gear and Train Before Every Mission
The Hive serves as the Gunman’s operational base and acts as the hub between contracts.
Here you can inspect the weapon wall, unlock new equipment, and use the workbench to modify weapon appearance and certain sound effects.
The base also includes a traditional shooting range, pop-up targets, a fast shooting course, and a training area with holographic enemies.
These activities allow you to become familiar with weapons before entering real missions and also provide challenges connected to leaderboards.
The Hive is therefore more than a three-dimensional menu, functioning as an area where you can improve accuracy, speed, and weapon handling.
More Than 18 Weapons, Attachments, a Bow, and Knives
The arsenal includes at least 18 unlockable weapons, each with dedicated attachments.
You can experiment with pistols, rifles, and other weapon categories, adapting your equipment to the needs of each contract.
A compound bow and knives are also available, providing alternatives to conventional firearms and increasing the variety of possible approaches.
Customization also allows you to change the appearance of certain weapons through the workbench located in the base.
The system is designed to reward familiarity with each tool: aiming speed, space management, and equipment choice become especially important in situations involving large numbers of enemies.
Takedown and Last Stand Add New Challenges Beyond the Campaign
In addition to the story contracts, two challenge modes are available across five maps.
Takedown allows you to choose the type and number of enemies, up to 30 opponents, and requires you to eliminate every hostile force in the area.
Last Stand instead uses a survival structure. You must withstand continuous waves of enemies while also defusing bombs to extend the session for as long as possible.
Contracts, challenges, and minigames include Steam leaderboards separated between VR and Non-VR, making it possible to compare scores and performance with other players.
Unlockable cheats are also available and can offer alternative ways to replay previously completed content.
Play in VR or as a Traditional FPS
One of the game’s most distinctive features is the ability to choose between virtual reality and conventional play.
VR mode supports OpenXR and tracked controllers, with both standing and seated play available.
Players without a headset can instead play normally on PC in Non-VR FPS mode. The developer also states Non-VR support for Steam Deck.
This dual approach makes the title accessible to different audiences without making a VR headset mandatory.
Separate leaderboards also help keep performance comparisons fair between very different control systems.
Custom Music and an Optional Low-Violence Mode
The game includes a feature that allows you to play personal MP3 files through the Gunman’s virtual smartphone.
You can therefore accompany missions and gunfights with your own music, reinforcing the action-movie atmosphere.
An optional Low-Violence Mode is also available. When enabled, it removes nearly all blood and splatter effects while preserving the gunplay-focused gameplay.
This option does not turn the game into a violence-free experience, but it significantly reduces the graphic presentation of the most explicit effects.
Early Access and Planned Content Toward Version 1.0
Gunman Contracts - Stand Alone entered Early Access on September 10, 2026.
The current version already includes three story contracts, two challenge modes, weapons and attachments, The Hive, leaderboards, and both VR and Non-VR support.
The stated plan includes at least three additional contracts set in new locations, along with new weapons and features.
The developer has not announced a final date for leaving Early Access and expects to continue expanding the game over the coming years.
Timelines, features, and future content therefore remain subject to change during development.
