Turn religion into one of the most decisive forces of the Middle Ages

Crusader Kings III: By God Alone is a Core Expansion focused on religious life, relations with the Church and the conflict between spiritual authority and temporal power. Rule theocracies, take part in councils, influence the papacy, confront heresies and shape the future of faith across your realm.

Rule theocracies and take control of ecclesiastical power

By God Alone introduces the ability to play as theocratic realms led by religious figures.

You can take control of territories ruled by archbishops and even play as the Pope, gaining access to new resources connected to spiritual authority and the wealth of the Church.

This new perspective changes the way Crusader Kings III is played, because power no longer depends only on armies, dynasties and vassals, but also on your ability to control religious institutions.

Take part in Councils and influence the evolution of the Christian faith

The expansion introduces a new persistent Situation dedicated to Christian realms.

You can participate in Ecumenical Councils, contribute to doctrinal debates and influence the way the faith develops over the course of the campaign.

Religious decisions can have major consequences for relations between rulers, clergy and the population, turning theological questions into true instruments of political power.

Face heresies, schisms and religious conflicts

Deviations from official doctrine become much more important.

New practices and interpretations of the faith can be considered heretical and can drain influence and wealth from dominant religious institutions.

Rulers can choose whether to comply with the demands of the Church or support alternative movements, accepting the risk of entering into conflict with spiritual authorities.

In campaigns starting in 867, Christianity can also go through events capable of leading to the Great Schism between Western Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy.

Build Monastic Orders and strengthen spiritual power

By God Alone expands the role of religious orders by introducing Monastic Orders capable of becoming centers of theological research and influence.

Hosting the headquarters of an order can grant important benefits to your domain.

Monastic orders also contribute to the spiritual fulfillment of characters, offering new possibilities for rulers who want to build a sovereign deeply connected to their faith.

Manage sin, virtue and spiritual fulfillment

The inner life of characters becomes a much more important part of the experience.

The new Spiritual Fulfillment system takes traits, actions and religious tenets into account to represent each individual’s personal relationship with their faith.

Virtuous or sinful actions affect not only a character’s stress, but also their perception of salvation, their relationship with God and their concerns about the afterlife.

This adds another narrative and strategic layer to character development.

Influence the Pope, cardinals and the hierarchy of the Church

The expansion introduces new ecclesiastical structures, including archdioceses and the College of Cardinals.

The Pope can appoint cardinals throughout the Christian world, while secular rulers can attempt to influence the College in order to steer Church decisions in their favor.

Religious politics therefore becomes a new battlefield, where favors, political pressure and personal influence can be just as important as an army.

Create new holy sites and control the relationship between Church and crown

Holy sites can evolve dynamically throughout the campaign, adapting to changes within different faiths.

Cathedrals can develop into major religious centers and may aspire to become true holy sites.

The expansion also introduces new mechanics related to the relationship between religious and secular characters. Rulers can try to manipulate members of the clergy as political tools, while ecclesiastical rulers can use political figures to intervene in temporal affairs.

The result is a system in which faith and politics become even harder to separate.
