The Epic Escape

Zack awakens in a mysterious place, surrounded by debris and luminescent liquid, with Cloud lying next to him immersed in the same liquid in a sort of incubator. Both have been captured by Professor Hojo for experiments using Jenova cells, following their heroic battle against Sephiroth.

Zack frees Cloud, who is in a catatonic state due to Mako exposure, and dresses him in SOLDIER uniform. Subsequently, carrying Cloud on his back, he sets out towards the village but is attacked by numerous Shinra soldiers. Zack skillfully manages to defeat the assailants and, with Cloud by his side, embarks on the long journey to Midgar. After days of arduous travel, they find refuge in a clearing to rest, where they are joined by Cissnei, sent along with the Turks to track them down, who decides to help them by covering their escape.

Zack accompanies Cloud, still unconscious, to his hometown, Gongaga. Leaving Cloud under Cissnei's watch, he goes to Cloud's family. Here, Cissnei reveals to Zack that she is on the trail of Angeal. Catching sight of a winged figure heading towards a hill, Zack heads towards it, but instead of Angeal, he finds Genesis and Hollander. Hollander, injured and captured by Genesis, has injected himself with the same Jenova cells to survive, becoming a kind of clone with a limited lifespan.
