CARRION is an action horror game developed by Phobia Game Studio and published by Devolver Digital, released on July 23, 2020.

The game uses a distinctive formula known as reverse horror: instead of controlling a victim trying to escape from a creature, you are the monster.

You take control of an amorphous organism of unknown origin, imprisoned inside a massive research facility.

You can move through corridors, passages, and rooms at high speed, rapidly reaching enemies or retreating when a situation becomes too dangerous.

The movement system directly contributes to the pace of the experience: instead of using normal jumps or platforms, the creature drags and launches itself through environments with extremely fluid motion.

Mobility also allows you to attack from unexpected directions, bypass defenses, and use the structure itself as part of your strategy.

This mechanic makes exploration feel very different from a traditional platformer or horror game.

The humans inside the facility try to defend themselves using weapons, security systems, and other countermeasures.

The creature, however, can use speed, strength, and biological abilities to surprise them.

You can grab victims with your tentacles, drag them across rooms, throw them against environmental objects, or consume them.

Eliminating humans is not only a spectacular part of the gameplay: feeding allows the creature to increase its biomass.

Better-equipped guards gradually become more dangerous and can use firearms, protective gear, and devices capable of dealing significant damage.

It therefore becomes important to decide when to attack directly and when to use darkness, speed, and the environment to prepare an ambush.

Grow and evolve by unlocking new abilities

Progression in CARRION is closely tied to the biological evolution of the creature.

By exploring the facility, you can obtain new abilities that change the way you interact with enemies and environments.

Depending on the amount of biomass accumulated, the creature can take on different sizes and gain access to different abilities.

Some abilities are focused on combat, while others allow you to overcome environmental obstacles or adopt more stealth-oriented approaches.

As you progress, you become increasingly powerful and gain access to previously unreachable areas.

The system creates a metroidvania-style progression structure, where new abilities open up paths, doors, and additional exploration opportunities.

To move forward, you need to learn how to use the creature’s different forms effectively and understand which ability best suits each situation.

Explore an interconnected metroidvania-style facility

CARRION does not use a simple linear sequence of levels.

The game takes place inside a large interconnected complex made up of laboratories, industrial structures, containment zones, and numerous secondary passages.

Many areas cannot be reached at first and only become accessible after obtaining specific abilities.

Exploration therefore requires you to remember doors, obstacles, and routes encountered earlier.

There are also points where the creature can spread its biomass and progressively take control of the entire facility.

The level design combines exploration, combat, and environmental puzzles without interrupting the flow of the adventure.

This structure makes the laboratory feel like a single space that is gradually conquered rather than a series of completely separate stages.

Discover the story through the environment and mysterious sequences

CARRION tells much of its story without relying on lengthy dialogue.

The creature’s past and the events that took place inside the laboratory are suggested through environments, research facilities, and specific narrative sequences.

During exploration, you can uncover elements that gradually help explain what happened before the escape.

Some sections temporarily change perspective and provide further information about the origins of the events.

The narrative deliberately remains mysterious and leaves it up to the player to connect different clues.

The pixel art strongly contributes to the atmosphere, depicting industrial laboratories, bodies, fluids, and the creature’s movements with a detailed and immediately recognizable style.

Audio and animations complete the horror setting, turning every encounter into a particularly intense scene.
